I'm looking at replacing the dreadfully worthless factory tires on my '07 Chevy Cobalt, most likely with something like the Goodyear Eagle F1 All-Season (i will have seperate winter tires, some 27" Interco Super Swamper Radials on 15" rims... i'm insane i know but i want to make the snow my b!tch) and since the stock tires are p205/55/r16's, i wondered if i could go to p225/50/r16's instead to get a wider tire for improved dry traction. I would be using the same factory option rim (the one that's aluminum with a plastic cover... yeah it's lame) so hopefully the beads can handle being a little narrow. I know on camaro's we would always step up 10 or 20 over the stock width with no problems.

You're worried about clearance issues with 20mm wider tires and you're planning on putting super swampers on? Wow.The 225's will only be 1/4 mm taller and 10mm wider on either side. You're fine. Buy some studded winter tires instead of the swampers.

They are both 24.9 inches tall, you go from 8.4 to 9.2 inch width at the widest point and from 6.8 to 7.4 inches on the tread block with the tire change. Fitment should not be a problem, double check the clearance when cornering before comitting to the swap just to be safe. The OE 6 inch wheels can hold a 225-50-16 but it is the smallest size wheel they fit, you might want to consider a set of 7 inch alloys.Your 27 inch Swampers will do significant damage to the car if used, I'd look for some good snow tires in the OE size instead.Have fun.

It will work, as long as you get the same 16 inch. The 225 will be wider, just make sure it doesnt hit the fender when the car is bouncing , and it doesnt disturb the turning angle. Also on bounce, make sure it doesnt hit the inside suspension, wheel well.Wider is not so good in winter.

As long as the radios is the same, cause this can develop problems with the ABS if equipped, clearance should not be a problem. Unless you buy a speed calibrator the speed-o will be off, and this also can cause a bunch of other problems with the sensors.
