I'm curious...I am going to trade my wife's 1995 Malibu Max in for a new vehicle. The max gets aprox. 24 miles per gallon. She needs a vehicle that she can fit her bicycle into (not on top or on a rack...for security purposes) it is a $4000.00 road bike.I am driving a new 2008 Ford Focus that gets 34+ miles per gallon and it certainly would fit if the seats were down...HOWEVER...do any of you have a suggestion for a "high" mileage vehicle for us?I'll be looking at virtually all of them.We both commute 35 miles (each way) to work and car-pooling is not an option due to changing schedules. Thanks in advance

The only likely candidate that would get better fuel economy than that would be a VW Jetta TDI wagon. Be warned that reliability isn't likely to be as good as the Malibu or the Focus, and that it will be very hard to track one down. Unfortunately, wagons have fallen out of favor, and if you want good fuel economy, you're pretty much stuck with sedans and the occasional hatchback. (People are assholes.)

depends what your budget isif your looking for a wagon, try looking into a VW jetta wagon, or a Vovlo XC70 crosscountry wagon. They're reliable, safe, fun to drive, and they're long enough to fit your precious bike in. If yoru not into the wagon, try checking out SUVSA few suv's with decent milages would be:The honda CRVToyota HighlanderSaturn VueAlthough they tend to use a bit more gas, suv's are known for their versaility, meaning that you can fit alot of people, or stuff in them.If all fails, try getting a hatchback. It combines all the versatility of an SUV and the good milage of a sedan. My favorites for space have been:Toyota MatrixVW Rabbit
