View Full Version : Greg Oden....Thumbs Down?
ReneC 03-29-2004, 07:03 AM Summer League Report: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ys-summerleague070607&prov=yhoo&type=lgns Check that out^. I've said it since day one, Greg Oden is OVERRATED, literally. Hes capable of playing decent defense, but his offense is horrible. He'll be a role player in the Nba, NO star player at all. Quoted from summer league:"The No. 1 overall pick of last month's draft really struggled. He finished with more fouls (10) than rebounds and points combined (eight). "Terrible. Blazer fans, i hate to put you down but, history repeats itself. You picked a wrong guy.Opinions?Im happy to know at least John W has some sense in him. Rest of yall sound like some pathetic upset blazer fans. If he cant score against some Celtic players, then his future in the nba is BLEEK.
enoriverbend4435 03-30-2004, 12:17 PM i think if you give him a few more years, once he has really learned the game and what he need to do to be effective he will be a great player. but give him time it took gilbert arenas a while before he became the player he is today.
Crystal 03-31-2004, 05:32 PM 10 fouls in a summer leaguegame ,that to me sounds like he doesnt know how to play defense and got away with things at ohio state, portalnd lottery ball again next year ,bad choice
calm down. its just summer league. this game means next to nothing. nobody is going to expect oden to come in right away and dominate. he needs a few years of experience. and besides durant didnt do all that well either 5-17 shooting. you cant judge these guys based on 1 game especially since its a meaningless game.
bijak_sinner7674 04-03-2004, 04:01 AM Dude, it was a Summer League game. Summer League games don't mean anything.
shiprepairwoman6681 04-04-2004, 09:15 AM i guess one meaningless summer league game is indicative of how he will play his entire career?
Popeye 04-05-2004, 02:29 PM I disagree, it was his first game in a pro style game. He is finally playing against people at his level. There will be a learning curve and he will dominate by year 3 defensively and will become an all star by working on his offensive game. How can you say hes overrated for his first game as a nba'er. That is flawed thinking and its shows you dont know much about sports
Space_Cadet 04-06-2004, 07:44 PM Why you hatin'?He hasn't had time to sh!T yet.I think we have an all-star here but beyond that who knows. There are not that many good centers in the league today - don't be surprised if he shines.
jhl1468 04-08-2004, 12:58 AM He's still young and physically underdeveloped. Give him some time to fill out his physique and mature mentally. Of course he's no Lebron James... but who ever has been? With that 7+ foot frame I'm sure he'll dominate in some way.
One game doesn't make or break a player so get over it. If he put up 25-12 with 5 blocks in a summer league game it still wouldn't mean crap. Until the season rolls around any kind of analysis is a waste.
I completely agree. He will never be a great offensive player. But i think he can be more than a role player just because of his size and athleticism.
Brian 04-11-2004, 04:41 PM So you are basing what will happen in his career on ONE summer league game? That's really unbiased. Using your criteria, I could choose a game during MJ's rookie year where he struggled and point to it and say "Chicago, you picked the wrong guy". Well, no it wouldn't be an even comparison - Jordan was three years older when he entered the league!
spunkymunky00 04-12-2004, 09:56 PM One summer league game does not make a career. But I do believe it will take Oden a couple of years to show what he can do.
we have to wait to see what he does in his rookie year, he plays very good defense and good offense
Box8158758 04-15-2004, 08:25 AM yeah i saw that he did horrible. if he keeps fouling then he will lose playing time.
smartie_pantalones 04-16-2004, 01:39 PM "Quoted from summer league:..."- that's an analysis from one game. all players in the NBA have at least one bad game, and i bet you each NBA player struggled in his first NBA game. the article never predicted he would be a bust, that he would suck, that he would be mediocre, or that he's bad on offense. learn how to read a game summary. it summarized his performance for ONE GAME."his offense is horrible"- he averaged 15 ppg (good enough to lead his team), in 30 mpg or like 20pts/40min, including scoring 22 in the title game"You picked a wrong guy."- USA basketball invitee? NCAA title game with a broken hand? never lost a home game since 6th grade? all big 10 defensive player of the year? parade high school POY? all-american 1st team?....yeah, there was like NO reason for the blazers to pick this kid. all these awards he's won recently? they obviously serve as no indication of his future, right?
Shiva 04-17-2004, 06:53 PM well here are the numbersdurant - low shooting percentage, not assits, and1 rebound5-for-17 shooting. 29% shooting!!!! and 25% 3point shots.grabed 1 rebound in 29.46. oden - shot well, foulded out which means he played defense. was 3 for 4, 75% shooting 2 rebounds two blocks in 20.35its easy to let every one score like durant and have only 1fould, and shoot less than 30 percent. kobe does that allthe time.its hard to play defense and shoot high percentage, shaqdoes and he is in fould troube most of the time too.sounds to me like you got a kobe/durant vs shaq/odensituation...and we know who has more titles.so if you want to win, oden will get you titles, durant willnot.
jetten 04-19-2004, 12:08 AM It's a learning curb, he just getting his first taste of the league, dont call him under achieving, just because of a summer league game
SauceMe 04-20-2004, 05:22 AM Heh. One summer league game determines a guy's career. That's news to me.
I would have not picked Oden first, he should have stayed in college to develop his offense. He fouls too much, which means he is too aggressive. He needs to stay in college to learn the art of being of a a big man and learn some more basics. I am not saying he wont be good, but I think he would have developed into a better player. But of course now all people think about is money, play the game right and consistent and the money will come to you anyway.
Perplexed 04-22-2004, 03:51 PM It's been my opinion since day one that Greg Oden would not come into the league ready to play as so many people thought he would, but will be develop into a solid defensive center but never put up the offensive numbers that some people expect of him. However I'm not going to say he's another Michael Olowokandi after one game (which he was playing sick, not that it has anything to do with the point I'm trying to make). In two years we will know if he is ever going to be anything in this league or not. Now, we let him develop.Durant was also a huge gamble too. He was a big guy with good athletic skills, but from day one the scoop on him has been that he needs to develop his game before he will become a good player. Let me translate that -- he is a mobile big guy but needs to learn to play basketball before he may someday be good.
Dreamer6817 04-23-2004, 09:05 PM Thumps down. He may look like a Kobe Bryant kinda scorer but dat game against da Celtics made him look like another Rasheed Wallace.
Bradistan 04-25-2004, 02:20 AM Yes
AndrewMeeds 04-26-2004, 07:34 AM Are you on crack? The guy was a college freshman with a broken wrist. He is a great package. Mobile, strong, swats shots, has a jump hook, dunks alot , can even make free throws. He'll be a top five NBA center easily in 3-4 years. He's a building block for a champion every team has to have.
slara512 04-27-2004, 12:49 PM lol thats pretty funny
