Have you tried AVG Anti-Virus? It's free and although I found it a little annoying at times (it updates itself all the time) it does have AWESOME coverage.And it's free!

Do not buy any anti-virus software. The best anti-virus software out there is completely free at http://free.grisoft.com It works better than anything you could pay for. I have been using it for 6 years and not a virus yet.

Freeafterrebate.info is always running deals for free antivirus programs. I don't know how good any of them are, as I don't run antivirus, I use firefox browser and don't allow install on demand. I've been going about 5 years without a virus.
