my oldest ds, 2 yrs, has a sacral dimple. Until just recently it was no big deal. He fell shortly before his birthday and it began to leak. Long story short he has a sinus track from the dimple down to the tail bone with no comunication with the spine. Our ped. thinks it should be closed and so does the general surgeon we saw today; however the neurosurgeon doesn't think a surgical closure is nesesary. My hubby is very nervous about the surgery option but I think it being so close to a unclean area if we didn't close it we'd be setting him up for future infections. Doe's anyone out there have any experience with this type of thing
I had a sacral dimple which did nothing until I was about 13. It started out feeling similar to a bruise but then developed into what was then described as a boil (late 80s). I had it opened, drained and closed many times only to have it become bigger. It was eventually diagnosed as a "pilonidal sinus" by a surgeon who explained that each time the sinus was closed and appeared to have healed, it was still growing beneath the surface. This surgeon opened the area, removed a large section of affected tissue but instead of stitching it closed, he packed it with moistened gauze which was removed and re-packed daily. The idea was that it would heal properly from the bottom up.It took 2 of these surgeries before it was successful. Now 16 years down the track I have had no major problems except from time to time the area gets sore and slightly swollen but nothing to worry about. There may be very different ways of treating it now and in saying that, your son's situation may be entirely different too. I do believe that seeking a few more opinions is valid in this situation as you are dealing with a highly sensitive area.I wish you and your son all the best.
